The Home Economics Institute of Australia (HEIA) is delighted to have blogging functionality on its website, and even more delighted to have you reading our first blog post! Here we plan to provide you with information about a range of issues related to home economics and HEIA.
One of the exciting events HEIA has planned for the coming year is its 20th anniversary celebrations. The decision to form the Home Economics Institute of Australia marked the beginning of an important phase for the home economics profession—it has given members a national focus on issues affecting the broad community of home economists, and an effective network of communication and action. The decision to form a national body followed a two year period of planning and consultation. Delegates representing all state and territory home economics associations met at the historic Salamanca Meeting in Hobart, Tasmania, where they voted unanimously to establish the Home Economics Institute of Australia on 13 November 1993. The inaugural Annual General Meeting of HEIA took place in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory on 12 March 1994. Very appropriately this meeting took place in the International Year of the Family.
Under the leadership of HEIA President-elect Peta Craig, HEIA has been planning its celebrations over many months and you will see the range of fantastic events on offer—the Welcome BBQ, the Australian Curriculum seminar, the Celebratory dinner to name a few. You are invited to come along and celebrate the 20 years of HEIA having a strong, national voice, representing the unified view on various home economics issues.
