The field of study, having as its focus the wellbeing of people in their everyday living in the household and family. The profession has a long history where job titles may change but the intent remains solid in its mission. In NSW a home economist could be the person who tests the recipes for that latest recipe book that you purchased or a teacher/lecturer in secondary schools, college or university. Don't forget to keep 26th June 2009 free for our CAFS workshop to be held at Australian Catholic University (see details in events section) HEIA is looking for old copies of the Commonsense Cookery Book (CSCB). History The following publication provides a history of home economics in schools to 1982 and is available from the Secretary of the HEIA (NSW Division). Peacock, JI (1982) A History of Home Economics in New South Wales Marrickville Wentworth Press. The following study provides an example of one of the thirteen founding schools of Home Science in Technical Education in New South Wales and its relationship to the development of Vocational Education and the wider social context. Hill, S D (1990) Ventures into Home Science Education in the Central West: Case Studies of Bathurst and Lithgow (unpublished) It is a research study submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Bachelor of Education (Technical) University of Technology Sydney and available from UTS. This study was designed to: 1) record the initial years of the School of Home Science in Sydney (1880-1914) 2) record the establishment of the School at Bathurst (1891- 1988) and Lithgow (1901-1988) Mission The mission of the Home Economics profession in Australia is to educate, inform, and to act as an advocate to government, industry and the community for families and households, so that individuals can make informed choices in order to enhance their everyday living. |
