Margaret Bamford Memorial Lecture
Margaret Bamford was one of those who attended the first meeting to discuss the formation of the Home Economics Association of NSW. The Association was established in 1962. Margaret accepted the Office of Assistant Honorary Secretary at the time. Margaret began her teaching career in the late 1920’s and was soon acknowledged to be a most competent teacher. She was selected to provide demonstration lessons at Burwood Home Science School for students training to become teachers of Home Economics subjects.

In 1951, Margaret made the decision to change her career and left teaching to take up a position with J R Love & Co as a “Home Economist” and worked under the name of “June Clyde”. In the 1960’s she spent some time in the USA undertaking research to assist her company to develop new recipes for their packaged food division.

Margaret did not loose touch with schools and their needs. She convinced the company that schools needed assistance and the company provided to all secondary schools in the metropolitan area supplies of plain and self-raising flour free of charge, for many years. Margaret made frequent visits to schools and was always a most welcome guest.

When she suffered an unfortunate loss, she was forced to give up her work with J R Love & Company and at that time returned to teaching. She moved to the NSW Department of Education Correspondence School where her work helped those students isolated by distance or ill health. Being a visionary, alert and enthusiastic person, Margaret brought new approaches to the correspondence learning materials. The correspondence notes were also made available to teachers in isolated areas of the state for in-service assistance.

After her death, her solicitor contacted the Association to advise the President that the Association was a beneficiary of the Estate of the late Margaret Bamford. The Association resolved to invest the considerable funds and to use the interest to bring an eminent speaker to address members to promote the profession of Home Economics and those involved with it. This bi-annual Lecture to be known as the ‘Margaret Bamford Memorial Lecture’. This event is sometimes combined with a one day seminar providing an in-service program for home economics professionals. More recently, since the inaugural High Achiever Award, the Margaret Bamford Lecture combined with the function to present the High Achiever Award.
