HEIA(Q) home

Saturday 23 August 2008, Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre

Invitation to attend

On behalf of the Home Economics Institute of Australia (Qld) I invite you to attend the 2008 conference Sustainable futures and home economics: From consumer to citizen, being held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, Queensland, on 23 August 2008.

The first notice of the conference has been sent to all HEIA(Q)members.

The conference is designed to empower home economics professionals to address two key imperatives for the profession:

  • the global imperative of how everyday practices related to home and family impact on sustainable futures, and the implications of that for our personal and professional lives
  • sustainability of good practice in the home economics classroom, in light of initiatives such as Queensland’s Essential Learnings and Standards, Education Queensland’s Values Framework, and related teaching and learning implications.

The interrelated themes will consider, for example
  • What is sustainable practice
  • What are the environmental impacts?
  • How do sustainable futures and citizenship relate to home economics and everyday practices?
  • What actions can we take?
  • How can we really make a difference?
  • How can the Essential Learnings and Standards be used to focus on sustainability and citizenship in school programs?

The conference will feature distinguished international and national commentators who will engage in two debates, one about food and nutrition, and one about textiles, defining and discussing sustainability issues, and exploring the notions of consumption and citizenship. The workshop program will build on the debates to explore ethical issues in detail, as well as address practical classroom implementation strategies in the context of contemporary educational imperatives. A high-profile education academic will contextualise the issues in terms of what this means for a 21st Century curriculum.

Participants can expect to hear the latest information from speakers who have gained their knowledge from hands-on experience, learn from the initiatives of others and develop new contacts.

The conference will provide an ideal opportunity for you to network with colleagues in a professional and enjoyable environment. We look forward to welcoming you to Brisbane for Sustainable futures and home economics: From consumer to citizen.
