The members

The members of the Queensland Division of the Home Economics Institute of Australia include professionals from a range of settings. However, the dominant professional status is that linked with formal school-based home economics education. This includes practising and retired school teachers, curriculum officers and tertiary lecturers. This core of home economics educators is complemented by a small but important group of home economics professionals who work in community organisations such as public health, nutrition and consumer affairs

Who we are

The Home Economics Institute of Australia (Qld) Inc. is a Division of the national peak professional association for home economics in Australia - the Home Economics Institute of Australia Inc..The Queensland Division of the Institute supports the mission of the Institute - that is, to enhance the professionalism and political legitimation of Australian home economists, and supports the mission of the profession in Australia - that is, to educate, inform, and to act as an advocate to government, industry and the community for families and households, so that individuals can make informed choices in order to enhance their everyday living. In supporting these missions, the Queensland Division provides leadership in and advocacy for, in particular, effective education related to the wellbeing of individuals and families in their everyday living.

History

Queensland had a professional association for home economists, the Home Economics Association of Queensland (HEAQ), for many years prior to the formation of the national organisation, the Home Economics Association of Australia (HEAA). Membership of HEAA was separate from and additional to membership of HEAQ. Like many of the other states and territories, many Queensland home economics professionals were staunch supporters of HEAQ but did not belong to HEAA. In the 1980s, the Queensland Association of Home Economics Teachers (QAHET) was formed as an organisation to specifically meet the needs of home economics teachers. In the early 1990s, all the state and territory home economics associations (not the teacher organisations) voted unanimously to establish the Home Economics Institute of Australia. The formation of this body meant that members join the national Institute and automatically become members of the Division in the state or territory where they reside. In 1996 the QAHET ceased operating in a move towards one united professional association for home economists in Queensland the Home Economics Institute of Australia (Qld) Inc..

WHAT WE OFFER
Members of the Queensland Division enjoy the benefits offered by the national body as well as the benefits offered by the Queensland Division.
Benefits offered by the Queensland Division include the following:

Advocacy
The Queensland Division of HEIA plays a strong advocacy role for home economics, and in particular for home economics education. The role of HEIA(Q) is recognised by education and other authorities when they invite HEIA(Q) to be represented on the various advisory committees. For example, HEIA(Q) has representatives on various curriculum committees of the Queensland Studies Authority. A strong membership makes the Division collectively stronger in its advocacy role. HEIA(Q) is also represented on the Queensland Health Food Safety for Consumers Committee.

Conferences

The Institute holds a national biennial conference. In addition, each year the Queensland Division holds a state one-day conference, typically in Brisbane. The state conference attracts approximately 180 home economics professionals throughout the state, providing ample opportunity for networking as well as professional enhancement. Registration fees are discounted for HEIA members. Click here to find out more about the State conference.
Discounts
Members receive significant savings on professional and personal development activities and events, both at a Divisional and national level.

Networking opportunities
Opportunities for networking occur at the many professional and personal development activities organised by the Division. The Division offers a range of additional events such as award presentation evenings, celebration of World Home Economics Day and student breakfasts.

Professional development
A professional development program is offered in several regions of the state as well as in the Brisbane metropolitan area. Typically 2-4 professional development seminars or workshops are run in approximately 10 regions throughout each year. In addition, a comprehensive program of 4-6 seminars/workshops is run in Brisbane each year. All events are considerably discounted for HEIA members. Click here to find out more about this year's professional development program.
