Welcome HEIA president
Last Updated on Thursday, 06 September 2012 21:50 Tuesday, 03 July 2012 21:53
Welcome to Karen Weitnauer HEIA's new President. Karen was elected as HEIA President at the AGM on 31 March 2012. She has had a long involvement with HEIA through her membership of the Tasmanian Division and is currently the HEIA(Tas) President. Karen is a passionate and energetic home economics teacher who says her guiding principle comes from meeting Martin Caraher (City University of London) at the HEIA conference in Darwin in 2009. According to Karen, 'Martin was talking about food security and sustainability, and commented that in educating the community we must act as though every action, no matter how small, can make a difference to our sustainability on this Earth. I believe we are well placed to affect this principle with passion in the home economics classroom.'
HEIA Council and membership extend a warm welcome to Karen.

NEW!! Life from the inside: Perspectives on social sustainability and interior architecture (2011, Curtin University WA)
Environments that people inhabit and experience have the power to enhance the wellbeing of individuals and their communities. Life from the Inside promotes discussion on the potential of interior architecture to improve and extend the quality of life through the design of our built environments. The editors position the debate through three lenses — community engagement, social justice and cultural heritage.
‘The book helps people to understand how interior architecture can educate the community on issues of social sustainability,’ Associate Professor Smith said. ‘It is a potential catalyst for change that brings people in this area together and encourages others to think about how they can create sustainable environments within their community.’

HEIA Submission - national food plan
Sunday, 25 September 2011 10:00
HEIA has submitted this issues paper in relation to the development of a National Food Plan. Food supply issues are
of particular interest to the home economics profession as access to nutritious, safe and affordable food is central to the health and wellbeing of the population. As highlighted in the issues paper, a potential benefit of a food plan is a more affordable and nutritious food supply and this would indeed be a beneficial outcome to support population health.
This is an Australian Government commitment to integrate food policy by looking at the whole food supply chain, to protect Australia's food security, and to deveop a strategy to maximise food production opportunities.

Protecting children from unhealthy food advertsing and promotion
The Obesity Policy Coalition has launched a new blueprint for regulating junk food advertising to children. HEIA has endorsed the proposal which was launched on 9 May has which has received overwhelming support from the media, consumer groups and the general public.
The blueprint sets out a plan for federal and state and territory governments to enact legislation to restrict all forms of advertising and promotion of unhealthy food and beverages to children. It specifies how legislation should operate, the types of advertising and promotion that should be restricted, and proposes definitions for key terms and phrases such as ‘unhealthy food’ and ‘directed to children’.
The blueprint has been backed by all leading Australian public health agencies, including the Australian Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance, the Australian Medical Association, and the Coalition on Food Advertising to Children.
The full proposal can be downloaded here and is a must read for those who support the restriction of unhealthy food advertising and promotion to children.
National professional standards for teachers
Last Updated on Sunday, 11 March 2012 21:05
During 2010 HEIA members contributed to the development of the National Professional Standards for Teachers. These standards have now been released by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).
The standards provide a framework which makes explicit the knowledge, practice and professional engagement required across four teacher career stages - Graduate, Proficient, Highly Accomplished and Lead. They provide an ongoing basis for teacher reflection and development and guide for professional learning.
