Join HEIA’s Jye Marshall from Swinburne University of Technology and discover why he is making waves in the fashion industry. A passionate educator with a focus on innovation and sustainability, Jye has extensive experience in both vocational and higher education. He has led design programs and taught courses that equip the next generation of fashion professionals. As an active designer of womenswear and menswear, Jye brings expertise from his background as a machinist and pattern maker. In this interactive session, he will discuss methods for integrating sustainable fashion practices into the classroom; including the circular economy, zero waste pattern cutting, conceptual design thinking and the latest design technologies. 2025 World Home Economics Day – Tackling overconsumption and its relationship to Sustainable Development Goal 12 and world congress 2028 Presenters: Sandy Smith, HEIA(WA) and International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE) Pacific Region representative and Sarah Wirth IFHE’s Region Pacific Vice-President Note: this session is free for all participants Find out how home economics can play a pivotal role in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 and building a sustainable future for all. The theme for World Home Economics Day, ‘Tackling overconsumption,’ aligns with SDG 12: ‘Responsible consumption and production’. Our current consumption patterns are unsustainable, contributing to health issues, climate change, and environmental degradation. It is time for change, and home economics can lead the way, particularly in addressing food, housing, and travel. Join Sandy Smith and Sarah Wirth as they explore how home economics empowers individuals and communities to make sustainable choices, improving quality of life without sacrifice. Sarah will also share the news and planning for Wellington's hosting of the World Congress of the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE) in 2028, an exciting event that marks the first time the congress will be held in New Zealand. Power in nutrition: Eating for health and performance Presenter: Isobelle Smith, University of Southern Cross and O’Malley Trust scholar Isobelle Smith will present her research on factors that affect physical and mental performance, including the pyramid of nutrition priorities. While her study focused on 17-19-year-old females, the insights are applicable to individuals of all ages. She will also discuss simple strategies for determining the right balance of ‘repair and build’ foods, ‘fuel’ foods, and ‘filling and add bulk foods’. |
