Congratulations to Jessica Harrison, recipient of the 2024 Marilyn Yates Prize for academic excellence. The prize was presented by HEIA(WA) life member Marilyn Yates at Edith Cowan University’s prize-giving ceremony, held at the Mount Lawley campus on Saturday 8 February 2025. Donated by HEIA(WA), this prize recognises the Bachelor of Education (Home Economics) graduate with the highest academic score across the four-year course.

Jessica, an O’Malley Trust scholar, has served as the student representative on the HEIA(WA) Committee of Management for the past two years, where her contributions have been highly valued. She has now been appointed to a full-time position at Wanneroo Secondary College.

Each prize recipient at the ceremony was invited to share a short reflection on their university experience. Below is the statement Jessica prepared, which was read at the event.

‘Going to uni has been the most challenging yet rewarding thing I have ever completed. I am so grateful to have my family, especially my husband, supporting me through this journey, and I'm sure he's glad it's over too. The connections I have made, and the knowledge I have learnt has kick-started my career and drive to be the best teacher I can possibly be. This wouldn't be possible without staff like Sandy Smith and Ellen Morrow guiding me through the difficult times and celebrating with me the rewarding moments. I am truly grateful for this award and the recognition it brings to the strengths of Home Economics teachers’.
