Can you tell us a little about your background and what brought you to the HEIA Council?
I am a Technological and Applied Studies (TAS) teacher from New South Wales with 13 years of experience. I got involved with HEIA’s NSW division after being invited by a colleague at my school and have remained active ever since. About five years ago, I attended a Council meeting in Sydney as an observer, and I have continued my involvement on Council as the NSW Council member since then.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the HEIA Council, and what is a recent highlight from your involvement?
I enjoy the opportunity to work with and for our members, both within my state and across the country. It is always amazing to hear about what is happening nationwide, and it is rewarding to be part of organising events, serving members, and advocating for Home Economics, both in NSW and across the country.
How do you see your role on the Council contributing to HEIA’s goals and future?
I have recently started organising our social media presence, which I believe is a great way to connect with current and future members. I am also looking forward to contributing as part of the Host committee for the 2027 national conference in Sydney.
What advice would you give to members looking to get more involved with HEIA’s committees or initiatives?
Contact your local council member, divisional chairperson, or president—we are always looking for more people to get involved, and there are many ways you can dip your toe in the water. It has been one of the best things I have ever done for my career and the best professional development I have ever been a part of.
