By HEIA Inc.
HEIA(V) chose to celebrate the 2025 World Home Economics Day on the nominated day – Friday March 21st. The successful event was coordinated by HEIA(V) member Dr Sandra Fordyce-Voorham, who also serves as a member of the Advisory Committee of the King and Amy O’Malley Trust. A convivial evening held at the Imperial Hotel in Melbourne, opposite the spectacular backdrop of Parliament House. The event was enjoyed by 35 guests, including seven O’Malley Trust scholars and their guests; Michelle Parente, Executive Officer of the King and Amy O’Malley Trust; Dr Leanne Compton, HEIA President, Chair of the O’Malley Trust, and Cheryl Sonter, HEIA Past President, along with many other HEIA(V) members.
O’Malley Trust Victorian state assessment panellists, Emma Stirling and Luke Martynov also attended to help celebrate the occasion. Luke was an ebullient host and Master of Ceremonies who introduced our guest speaker, HEIA(V) member and PhD candidate, Gail Boddy, who presented a summary of her research findings focusing on the professional development for secondary school home economics and food studies teachers, offering valuable insights and possibilities for their future professional learning.
Dr Sandra Fordyce-Voorham congratulated and presented each scholar with their certificate, thanking their guests for their support. Adding a delightful and insightful touch to the occasion, Luke read a short personalised bio for each scholar, highlighting their unique achievements and bringing a warm, personal element to the presentations. Finally, on behalf of HEIA, Dr Leanne Compton acknowledged HEIA(V) member Daniel Baldwin of MacKillop College, Werribee, as the Victorian Teacher of the Year. Daniel was recognised for his outstanding commitment to home economics education and his significant contribution to student learning and engagement. A nationally recognised leader, Daniel supports educators through mentoring, curriculum innovation, and professional development. His involvement with HEIA, Home Economics Victoria, and the Melbourne Royal Show highlights his dedication to advancing the subject’s relevance and impact for future generations.
The evening was a vibrant celebration of professional excellence, community, and the bright future of home economics education.
