It is not every day that a humble slice of cake connects you to a pioneering moment in history, but that is exactly what happened last month in a quiet corner of a local library in Melbourne. While browsing nearby shelves, a lively conversation amongst a group of seniors was overheard. They were joyfully reminiscing about a beloved old-fashioned slice they used to make, one filled with sweet memories and tradition.

That nostalgic chatter sparked curiosity … and down the rabbit hole we went. What was discovered was both surprising and delightful.

The slice in question carries a wonderful history. It is believed to have been originally created by country women in the 1930s to celebrate the arrival of Amy Johnson CBE, the first female pilot to fly solo from Britain to Australia. Her daring flight captured hearts around the world, and evidently inspired a delicious tribute in kitchens across the country.

So, next time you enjoy a bite of this nostalgic treat, remember you are tasting a piece of history, baked with pride and admiration for one of aviation’s great trailblazers.
Or if you have not tried it yet, here is the recipe, and a perfect excuse to bake it yourself!
